Shop properties must comply with federal regulations. This means that you have to provide at least 1 extinguishing unit per 150m² per floor. A fire extinguishing unit is a 6kg powder fire extinguisher or a 6l foam fire extinguisher. We recommend the use of foam fire extinguishers because they cause less collateral damage than powder extinguishers and because foam is easier to clean up (you need an industrial vacuum cleaner for powder). You can find more information about the required number and type of fire extinguishers in our article How many and which fire extinguishers/units do I need for professional use and apartments?
For larger retail properties (over 500m²) you may have to install fire reels. Consult your city's police code first and foremost. It also contains regulations regarding the use of emergency lighting, which you must also provide. Also contact your local fire brigade to get more answers.
Don't forget to attach a pictogram above the fire extinguisher and/or fire reels. This is mandatory, as are icons that indicate the (emergency) exit. A successful evacuation starts with a good indication!
